Your Electricity Bill and Your AC in a Riyadh Summer

Through a Riyadh summer, the largest share of an electricity bill goes to air conditioning. But a lot of what gets repeated about saving power is either wrong or barely matters, while the measures that genuinely work are less talked about and cheaper. This is what we see in the houses we work in.

Where the power goes inside the machine

The compressor is by far the largest consumer; the fans take a small fraction. Anything that makes the compressor run longer, or work against higher pressure, shows up directly on the bill.

That is why cleanliness is an electrical matter rather than a cosmetic one. An indoor coil coated in dust blocks heat transfer, so the machine needs longer to reach the same temperature. A blocked outdoor condenser raises discharge pressure, which increases compressor current draw every moment it runs.

Together, those two can make an electrically healthy unit consume noticeably more than an identical clean one, without its owner ever sensing a fault.

What genuinely makes a difference

Roughly in order of effect against effort, based on what we actually see:

  • Clean the indoor coil and the outdoor condenser, not just the filter. The filter catches the coarse material; the layer packed onto the fins is what insulates.
  • Free the outdoor unit. Clearance behind and in front, no cover, no closed panel. Hot air recirculating back into it raises consumption all day.
  • Set a sensible temperature and leave it. Swinging between 16 and 30 means more start cycles, and every start costs more than steady running.
  • Stop air leaking: a door onto a stairwell, an extractor running needlessly, a gap under the door. You are cooling the street.
  • Shade the sun-exposed wall and window, the west one especially. Heat that never enters the room needs no electricity to remove.
  • Repair leaks rather than repeatedly topping up refrigerant. A low charge makes the compressor run hot and run longer.

What is widely repeated and barely works

Turning the dial to its lowest setting for faster cooling: a domestic AC has one output. Setting it to 16 instead of 24 does not speed up cooling at all — it simply keeps running past the point where it would have cut out, using more power and leaving the room colder than you need.

Switching off and on repeatedly: turning the unit off for a short absence and back on when you return means starting from a room that has fully heated up, and the start cycle costs more than steady running. For a long absence, switching off is right. For an hour or two, it is not.

Relying on a fan alone in peak heat: a fan moves air, it does not lower its temperature. Useful as a supplement, not a substitute.

Topping up refrigerant as routine maintenance: refrigerant is not consumed. Repeated top-ups without leak detection treat the symptom, leave the cause, and raise consumption in between.

Inverters, and when they actually save

A conventional unit runs at one speed: full output or off. An inverter varies compressor speed to match the real load, running at partial output instead of cycling off and on.

The saving comes from long continuous running, not from the technology existing. In a bedroom or a majlis used for hours daily, the difference shows clearly across a season. In a room used an hour at a time, it is far smaller than the advertising suggests.

And in every case, an inverter with a dirty coil and a boxed-in outdoor unit will consume more than a clean, well-installed conventional machine. The order matters: fix the fundamentals first.

The practical summary

If you do one thing before summer: clean the indoor coil and the outdoor condenser, and make sure the outdoor unit can breathe. Those two alone return most machines to their design operating point.

Does setting the AC to 16 cool the room faster?

No. A domestic AC has a single output, so cooling speed is identical whether you set 16 or 24. The only difference is that it keeps running longer before cutting out, using more electricity and leaving the room colder than you need. Set a comfortable temperature and leave it.

Should I switch the AC off when I leave the house?

For a long absence, yes. For an hour or two, no — the room heats fully and the machine then starts a cycle from scratch, which costs more than steady running. For short absences, raise the setpoint a little rather than switching off entirely.

It depends on how fouled things are, but the effect is direct and measurable. The causes we see most: fouling accumulated on the coil and condenser across the season; a low charge from a slow leak, making the unit run longer with nothing to show; an outdoor unit that now has building work or a cover blocking its ventilation; or a weak run capacitor raising current draw. All are found by measuring current and pressures.

What is the best AC setting for Riyadh?

Whatever is comfortable without overshooting, and holding it steady matters more than the number. Every degree below what you actually need means longer compressor run time. More important than the setting is that the room is sealed and the machine is clean — a leaky house with a dirty unit will consume heavily whatever you set the dial to.
