Moving House With Your AC

A unit that ran for years without trouble can arrive at the new house with its charge gone or its compressor damaged — not because it was old, but because somebody took a spanner to it and cut the lines. Relocation is a technical procedure with a known order, and skipping one step costs more than the machine.

What a bad removal actually does

The familiar scene: someone arrives with an adjustable spanner, cracks the flare joints, there is a rush of escaping gas, the units come off the wall, the pipes get coiled up, and they leave. Everything that happened in those minutes was damage.

First, the entire charge is gone and will have to be bought again. Second, humid air has entered an open circuit — and moisture inside a refrigeration circuit cannot be wiped out. It combines with the compressor oil to form acids that attack the internal windings over months. Third, if the lines were bent or crushed while being coiled, there is now a restriction or a fine crack that will show up later as a leak.

The unit runs at the new house, fades after a few weeks, and someone says "the AC is old". It was not old. The move destroyed it.

Pump-down before disconnecting — the step that is never skipped

The circuit is sealed and all the refrigerant is inside it. Before any joint is broken, that charge has to be collected into the outdoor unit and shut in there. That is the pump-down.

The order: run the unit on cooling, then close the liquid valve — the thin line — while the compressor is still running, so refrigerant is drawn from the whole circuit into the outdoor unit. Gauges are watched until pressure falls close to zero, then the gas valve — the thick line — is closed and the unit switched off immediately.

Timing matters here: leaving the compressor running after both valves are shut pulls it into negative pressure and damages it. Those few minutes are the difference between a unit that moves intact and one that arrives broken.

Protecting the copper in transit

The moment the lines come off, the circuit is open to the atmosphere. The ends are capped straight away — with the original caps, brazed, or taped tightly — and never left open "until we get there".

Copper is coiled to a generous radius, not bent to sharp angles. Copper bent sharply loses internal bore at the bend, and that restriction reduces flow and raises pressure once reinstalled. It is not stood on, and nothing heavy goes on top of it in the vehicle.

The insulation around the lines is preserved too. Torn insulation means condensation forming on bare copper at the new house — one of the causes of water dripping into a room that gets misdiagnosed as a blocked drain.

Reinstallation — what has to happen

Reinstalling is not removal in reverse. The correct order: fix the bracket and set the outdoor unit somewhere with real clearance behind and in front of it; run the lines by the shortest sensible route with the fewest bends; then make the flare joints with proper tooling and torque them correctly rather than by force.

Then — and this is the step most often skipped — the circuit is evacuated with a vacuum pump to draw out air and moisture before the charge valves are opened. Only then are the valves opened and the refrigerant let back in.

Finally every joint is leak-checked, and circuit pressure, current draw and the intake-to-outlet temperature difference are measured to confirm the unit performs as it did. If the pipe run at the new place is longer than the old one, the matching additional refrigerant is weighed in.

When moving it is not worth doing at all

We say this plainly even when it costs us the job. If the unit is clearly past its service life, or its compressor was already weak, or it runs on an older refrigerant that is no longer easy to source, then the cost of moving it, recharging it and repairing whatever follows can approach the cost of a new machine that starts with a manufacturer warranty.

The same applies if the capacity does not suit the room at the new place. Moving a small unit into a larger room means a machine that runs constantly and never arrives; moving a large one into a small room means short cycling and a clammy space.

Questions about this service

Does an AC lose refrigerant when it is moved?

It should not lose any at all if the removal is done correctly. Pumping the charge down into the outdoor unit before breaking any joint shuts the entire charge inside the machine. Charge is only lost when joints are cracked open without a pump-down — which is what happens on most quick removals.

How long does removing and reinstalling a split unit take?

A correct removal, with pump-down and capped lines, takes longer than a quick one — and that time is in your favour. Reinstallation covers mounting, running the lines, making the joints, vacuum evacuation, leak checking and measurement. Anyone promising a removal and refit in minutes is skipping steps.

Will I need a refrigerant top-up after the move?

If the pump-down and reinstallation were done properly, no. The one exception is a pipe run at the new place longer than the old one, in which case the matching quantity is weighed in. A full recharge after every move is usually correcting a mistake made during removal.

It worked after the move and then faded weeks later. Why?

That pattern points to the move rather than the age of the machine. Common causes: moisture that entered the open circuit and was never drawn out with a vacuum pump before charging, a flare joint not torqued correctly that began seeping slowly, or a line crushed or sharply bent in transit.

Can I move the AC myself?

The mechanical part is not the problem. The problem is that pumping down and evacuating need gauges, a vacuum pump and a correct reading of pressures — without them refrigerant escapes and moisture gets in. Neither shows up the same day; they surface weeks later, by which point it is hard to connect them to the cause.
