AC Dripping Water Inside the Room — The Four Causes
An AC produces water by design: humid air passes over a cold coil, water vapour condenses, and it runs off. That water is supposed to leave the building through the drain line. When you find it on the floor or the wall, it means one thing — the water is there as it should be, but it never found its way out.
Cause one: the drain line is blocked
This is the most common by a wide margin. The drain line is a narrow pipe running from a pan beneath the evaporator to outside the building. Over time it collects airborne dust, which mixes with permanent moisture into silt and algae that block the passage.
Once blocked, the drain pan fills and overflows its lip into the room. The tell-tale sign: dripping starts after the unit has been running a while rather than immediately, worsens on humid days, and may be preceded by a gurgling sound.
The fix is clearing the whole drain path by pressure or suction, not just opening its end. We clean the pan itself on the same visit, because that is where the silt originates.
Cause two: the unit is not tilted correctly
An indoor unit is not designed to sit perfectly level. It needs a slight fall toward the drain outlet so water moves by gravity, and the drain line itself must slope continuously outward with no rising bends.
Rushed installations get this wrong often. Sometimes the unit is set dead level because it "looks neater"; sometimes the drain hose is kinked upward to clear a pipe or run behind a decorative panel, trapping water in the bend.
The tell here is that the dripping was present from the day of installation rather than appearing later. That is not a fault, it is an installation error, and the fix is resetting the fall and the hose route.
Cause three: the evaporator freezes and then thaws
If ice forms on the evaporator and then melts all at once, the volume exceeds what the pan can hold and it overflows. Here the dripping is a symptom of a completely different fault.
The freezing itself has two causes: restricted airflow across the coil — a blocked filter, a fouled coil, or a weak indoor fan — or a low refrigerant charge from a leak.
The tell: you will find ice on the pipes or on the coil, and the water arrives in intermittent bursts rather than a slow steady drip. Clearing the drain will achieve nothing here, because drainage is not the problem.
Cause four: missing insulation on the copper lines
The copper lines carrying refrigerant get very cold in operation. If the insulation around them is missing, torn, or not sealed at the joints, water vapour condenses directly onto the pipe surface.
That water never passes through the drain pan at all, so it runs down the wall, inside the cavity, or out of the opening where the pipes pass through. It is frequently misdiagnosed as a drain blockage.
The tell: the wetness appears along the pipe run or at the wall penetration rather than directly beneath the unit. The fix is replacing the insulation and sealing it at every joint.
Why this should not be left
Many people put a bowl under the unit and postpone. That turns a small problem into a large one. Escaping water saturates gypsum board, which stains and then sags, reaches paint and flooring, and can reach wiring runs inside the wall.
There is a health dimension too. Permanent moisture in the pan and line is an ideal environment for biological growth, and that is exactly the source of the bad smell many air conditioners produce on start-up.
Switch the unit off, work out which of the four causes matches the signs above, and call us. The first three are usually resolved in a single visit, and we measure and explain what we found before starting. Call or WhatsApp 0571839848.
Questions about this service
My AC has dripped since the day it was installed. Is that a manufacturing defect?
Usually not. Dripping from day one points to an installation error: the unit was set level or tilted the wrong way, the drain hose has a rising bend trapping water, or it was never properly seated at its outlet. All are correctable by resetting the fall and the hose route.
How do I tell whether it is drainage or freezing?
Look at the pattern. A blocked drain gives a slow, steady drip that starts after some running time. Freezing gives heavy intermittent bursts, and you will find ice on the pipes or the coil itself. If you see ice, the problem is airflow or refrigerant charge, not drainage.
Can I clear the drain line myself?
You can blow or suck through the outdoor end of the hose, and that resolves simple cases. But the silt and algae form in the drain pan further up the path, and the pan cannot be cleaned without opening the unit. If the dripping returns after a few days, the source is in the pan and needs a full clean.
Can I keep using the AC with a bowl underneath?
We would not advise it. Water reaches gypsum and paint and can reach wiring runs inside the wall, and that damage far exceeds the cost of the repair. Switch the unit off until it is fixed, particularly if the wet area is near a socket or an electrical panel.
Water is dripping from the outdoor unit. Is that normal?
Usually yes, and it is a completely different matter from indoor dripping. The outdoor unit discharges condensate and sometimes defrost water, which is normal operating behaviour. It only warrants concern if the volume is very large or the water carries oil — oil indicates a leak in the circuit.
