The Truth About Refrigerant Top-Ups — An AC Does Not Consume Gas
If you have been told your AC "needs gas every year", something is wrong with either the diagnosis or the intent. A refrigeration circuit is completely sealed. Refrigerant is not burned, not consumed, and does not evaporate into the air through normal use. The charge put in at the factory is supposed to stay there for the life of the machine.
Why "it needs gas" is not a diagnosis
The compressor pressurises the refrigerant so it heats up, it passes through the outdoor condenser and cools into a liquid, it drops through the expansion device, it evaporates in the indoor coil pulling heat from room air, and it returns to the compressor. A closed loop, with no outlet and no consumption.
So "the AC needs gas" is not a diagnosis. It is an observation that the charge is low. The right question immediately after it is: where did it go?
Anyone who adds refrigerant without answering that is selling you a postponement. The charge will drop again at the same rate, you will pay a second and third time, and the circuit loses lubricating oil with every leak, damaging the compressor progressively.
Where leaks usually are
Leak points are well known and can be checked methodically, and most are at joints rather than in the metal itself:
- Flare joints at the indoor and outdoor units — the most common by far, particularly if never torqued correctly at installation.
- Service valves, their caps, and port seals.
- Brazed joints in the copper, especially on installs where pipe was cut and rejoined.
- The indoor evaporator or outdoor condenser itself, through corrosion from dust and moisture over time.
- Pipe crushed or bent to a sharp angle during installation or a relocation.
How a leak is actually found
Detection is methodical, not guesswork. We start by measuring circuit pressure at the service port against what is expected for that refrigerant at that ambient temperature, and compressor draw in amps. Those two numbers say whether the charge really is low or whether the problem is somewhere else entirely.
If it is confirmed low, we locate it. The three usual methods: pressurising the circuit with dry nitrogen and watching for pressure decay, an electronic detector that senses refrigerant at likely points, or a tracer dye injected and viewed under UV light after a period of running.
Once the point is repaired, the circuit is evacuated with a vacuum pump to remove air and moisture — a step many skip. Moisture left inside combines with the oil to form acids that attack the compressor from within. Only then is the correct charge weighed in.
Charge by weight, not by estimate
Every unit carries a data plate stating the refrigerant type and the charge in grams. A correct charge uses an electronic scale to reach exactly that figure, plus a calculated addition if the pipe run exceeds the standard length permitted for that unit.
Overcharging is not safer than undercharging. Too much refrigerant raises discharge pressure, increases current draw, and can return liquid to the compressor. Too little weakens cooling and lets the compressor run hot.
This is also the answer to a common question about new units that will not cool: many were installed with pipe runs longer than permitted without the matching added charge, so they began life short.
Refrigerant types and why they do not mix
You will find several types in the market: R22 in older equipment, R410A in most current units, R32 in the newest. Each runs at different pressures and uses a different lubricating oil inside the compressor.
Mixing one with another, or substituting one for another without correctly converting the circuit and the oil, produces poor performance and compressor damage. The unit may appear to run at first and then fail weeks later.

What are the signs of low refrigerant?
Weak cooling that stays weak all day and does not improve at night, ice on the thin copper line at the outdoor unit or on the evaporator, a bubbling or hissing sound from the indoor unit, and sometimes oil residue around joints. But confirmation comes from measuring pressure and amps, not from the signs alone.
